Vern’s Place

Almost 70 years ago, in 1945, brothers Vern and Willard Nelson took a drive through La Porte, just 5-10 minutes north of Old Town Fort Collins, looking for the right spot to build a roadside café. Cruising along County Road 54 G, they saw a ring-neck cock pheasant on a swampy plot of land and decided that’s the land they wanted to buy. A year later, in 1946, Vern’s Place opened. 

Vern’s Place has been a family tradition since 1946. You are cordially invited to step into their home and join the family!  From the employee to the guest, this house is built on kindness, respect and great food. On any given day in their large parking area, you will see bicycles, motorcycles, electric cars, and pick-up trucks. You will find a mix of locals, first-time visitors, regulars, and tourists from across the nation!

This mix of patrons all has one thing in common- the love of hearty home-cooked meals prepared fresh from scratch. Vern’s has skated the test of time providing food you can count on at a good value, with exceptional service in a family-friendly atmosphere. As you may have heard, lots of people know this local spot for their giant cinnamon rolls- so yummy!

Something for everyone! Rotating chalkboard specials for breakfast, lunch, and dinner that change every 3 to 4 weeks. Healthy signature additions and gluten-friendly options are available.  American scratch cooking with country flair- the area’s best Prime Rib dinner! You will also find creative New Mexico influences, Mama’s home cooking, Cajun inspirations, “ Catch of the Day”, killer sandwiches, amazing fish fry and one of the best Colorado sourced burgers you can find in NOCO. At Vern’s Place, they pride themselves with their sauces. Everyone has different tastes on how they like to enjoy their foods, so if your menu items come with one of the house-made sauces, feel free to sub this sauce with one of your favorites- a very tasty green chili, red chili, queso, country gravy or brown gravy for no additional charge. 

The ambiance at Vern’s Place is a western-style lodge with exposed wood beams and wild game catches that adorn the walls. Comfortable leather booths and custom lighting features a Western Cowboy Chic atmosphere that doesn’t exist anywhere else around.  A lovely gift shop brings local flare along with uniquely Colorado gift items.   

Stop on in at the end of a day from hiking Lory State Park or fishing at Horsetooth Reservoir for specialty cocktails, beer on tap, microbrews, margaritas, mimosas or Bloody Mary’s.  If you come out on one of the many sunny days, you may enjoy the picturesque view of the Colorado foothills from the incredible 1500 sq. ft deck. 

Combining a new vision with a commitment to the same foundation has made Vern’s a Northern Colorado family favorite. In May 2018, Ashley Sell, and Gene Fiechtl bought Vern’s Place. Ashley has been dedicated to Vern’s since 2001 immersing herself with extensive knowledge of the business. Gene, with 36 years of restaurant and food distribution experience brings a tremendous passion for food and works tirelessly with the team of dedicated employees. Michael Sheldon, Head Chef, has recently joined this team and also works side by side with the awesome staff to achieve the high standards that make Vern’s great today!
