La Crêperie has earned a great reputation among the connoisseurs of our community. This European style restaurant, located at 2722 South College Avenue, Fort Collins, has the charm of a café right out of Paris. From the moment you walk in the door, you know this is a special restaurant. You are greeted with the charming ambiance of warmly hand-painted murals of the French countryside, Parisian diners, and myriad of other paintings handcrafted by the artistic talented owners. Soft French music playing in the background, with laid back and friendly service help set the tone for this casual cozy café.
Jean Claude’s career is all about his roots and family. Born in French Brittany, the cradle of buckwheat galettes and sweet crêpes, Jean Claude tenderly remembers his grandma cooking tens of galettes in the large chimney of the main room of her house – the kitchen. The smell of fresh butter and the crispy sound of the savory crêpe cooking in the pan, on top of which she would add an egg, pieces of cut smoked ham and a generous pinch of Gruyere (Swiss cheese), makes him hungry for her home cooking even today. She had a love for feeding the people around her, a desire to please her loved ones with her cooking, and a warm personality that she obviously transmitted to her grandson!
French baking has no secrets for Jean Claude who grew up among baguettes, croissants, Napoleons and Charlottes. Jean Claude worked in a few well known Parisian patisseries like La Plaine Monceaux, and Boulevard Malesherbes. His dad Jean was the proprietor of the best bakery of the resort town St Pierre Quiberon. Jean Claude discovered his love for baking as a child while watching his dad bake, and finally was able to pursue his passion at the age of 17, “hands-on” with his dad. And so like father like son, Enzo, age 21, Claude’s son is now learning this very skilled artisan way of French baking from his very successful Dad; so the wonderful French crêperie and bakery will continue on for generations to come.
After working in Paris, Jean Claude was ready to take over his dad’s business. He opened only for the busy season and traveled around the world for the rest of the year. As a result, he ended up in Key West, Fl in1983 and opened up a French bakery “Croissants de France”. The family sold the bakery and restaurant in 2000 and spent 9 years between Maui and Costa Rica. Colorado was always in their minds. In April 2009, Jean Claude, his wife Carole and his children Matilda and Enzo came to Fort Collins. They chose to come here for the good schools, the family-oriented ambiance as well as the great outdoors activities available all year round.
This popular French café, of course, specializes in crêpes. Crêpes are usually of two types- galettes are made with buckwheat and gluten-free, and sweet crêpes are made with wheat flour and slightly sweetened, also available gluten-free. Nowadays, galettes have become more sophisticated. Each galette is individually made and then stuffed with scrumptious fillings. Jean Claude has created over 30 savory galettes to choose from off the menu: from salmon and crab fillings to smoked sausages, chicken in béchamel sauce or just all veggies. Equally as delicious are the sweet crêpes. You can decide from some 20 different delectable sweet crêpes with fresh fruits, Nutella or chocolate ganache. You can even add a side of homemade whipped cream or Crème Anglais to make your crêpe experience perfectly delightful. The Crêpes Suzettes are also very popular and magical as orange-flavored Grand Marnier is used to flambe these delicious crêpes. Yum!
La Crêperie prides themselves on providing their customers with homemade specialties that are baked fresh daily.
The extensive menu not only offers crêpes but also delicious omelets, croissant benedicts, pancakes, les cocottes brioches, as well as fresh fruit plates. The traditional French onion soup topped with Claude’s baguette croutons, and baked to perfection with Swiss cheese has become many a local’s favorite. A wide array of Jean Claude’s homemade croissant sandwiches and the freshest salads are also served daily.
